There’s a New Breeze in the Outfield

The entire North Park outfield fence received a much-needed upgrade this spring following storm damage earlier in the year.  ³Ô¹ÏÍø-based contractor Taylor Fencing was selected for the installation. Known for its local roots and dependable work, the company completed the project last week.

It features an 8-foot poly-coated chain link design offering improved durability and a cleaner appearance for the field.  A bonus of a chain link fence is that it allows for a breeze to flow throw it into the field and stands which is expected to cool down players and fans during hot July and August games.

The new fencing enhances both safety and aesthetics at the park providing a more secure environment for youth baseball and other recreational events. With middle school baseball on the horizon, city staff expressed appreciation for the timely completion of the project.

The need for the new fence resulted from March 5th, straight-line winds which tore down several portions marking the final chapter for the aging wooden barrier. The old fence, installed by Graceland University several years ago, had weathered many seasons and was showing signs of wear even before the storm dealt its final blow.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Recreation Director Tim Brunner took quick action by applying for funding assistance. His grant application to the South Central Iowa Community Foundation (SCICF) for $10,000 helped fund the project. “The grant provided crucial support in addressing the damage without putting the full burden on the city’s budget,” said City Administrator and Clerk Barb Stuck.

The grant funds were then paired with $28,678.42 from the city's local option sales tax fund. This allocation was formally approved by the City Council during its May 8 meeting. The combination of funding sources ensured the project could move forward without delay.

City officials emphasized the importance of acting quickly to maintain the usability of the park’s facilities. “It’s great to have the local support to do what is necessary to keep our programs running,” Stuck said. “This was an unexpected expense that was partially mitigated by the grant funding to minimize financial impact.”

While no one welcomes storm damage, the incident brought renewed attention and resources to the city’s recreational program. With the upgrade now in place, the community can continue enjoying one of ³Ô¹ÏÍø’s central recreational spaces for seasons to come.
